For a typical example, though my version skips ahead in volume 2, from chapter three to chapter seven, I did get to enjoy a summary of what was missed: The adventures just keep on coming one of the wonderful things about this Everyman Library edition (translated by Willard R Trask) is that whenever there are omissions from Casanova’s, even longer, original memoir, the editor fills you in. Frankly, this ends up feeling like one of his tamer escapades. Typically, Casanova made his confinement as eventful as he could, culminating in a daring cross-the-roof-tops escape. Sometimes of course, this wasn’t practical and there are several chapters that chronicle his various incarcerations, including the 15 months of a five year sentence spend in the ‘Leads’ an infamous Venetian prison. Casanova didn’t just live for a long time (1725 – 1798) he packed as much into every year as possible. Few autobiographies could sustain such detail, here I’m only too aware of how much was missed out. In my defence, even in this abridged version, Casanova’s ‘History of My Life’ weighs in at well over 1,000 pages. I’m a little late with the review of my 6th non-fiction book this year. My fingers tightened around the jewelry box. “You do not know how things work over there.” His eyes came back to mine, seemingly oblivious to the incoming tide that soaked his Italian loafers. It held a tense note, as if the idea of me going to the Russian police had equally amused and disturbed him. Actually, after a few seconds of staring at me, he cast a disinterested look out at the bay and released a breath. “And once you are over there, what will you be able to do if he is?” “What if he’s in some kind of trouble?” I’d met a number of papa’s business partners, and there wasn’t a single one I would be comfortable being alone with. The knowledge released a small weight from my shoulders, but it also added another. What if he’s sick and doesn’t want me to know?”Īt the sincerity in his eyes, I believed him. You know he’s not watching his cholesterol. “Papa practically lives there these days. “The capital of Russia? The place I was born? The-” “Moscow,” he repeated slowly, like he’d heard me wrong. Had cool and collected Ivan Volkov actually paled at that single word, or was it my overactive imagination? He released my arm, his quiet intensity freezing me to the wet stone. “Home” was on my lips, but something entirely different, something that shocked even me, came out. How many more days of the holiday are there? Where I had envisaged childish faces glowing with wonder as they took in the treasures of our nation’s illustrious past, we instead had me shouting ‘Don’t touch, DON’T TOUCH, FFS DON’T TOUCH!” while stoutly shod pensioners tutted disapprovingly and drafted angry letters to the Daily Mail in their heads. As soon as we got there I remembered why I don’t use the flipping National Trust membership – because National Trust properties are full of very precious and breakable items, and very precious and breakable items don’t really mix with children, especially not small boys. I brightly announced that perhaps it might be a lovely idea to go to a stately home and learn about some history. The hilarious second novel, and Sunday Times No 1 Bestseller, from author of the smash hit Why Mummy Drinks. Here is what it says on the SpaceX website SpaceX designs, manufactures and launches advanced rockets and spacecraft. In Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future biographer Ashlee Vance gives us a picture of both the dreams and the man, peering back to where Musk began, describing his journey from then to now, looking at how he is impacting the world today, and gazing ahead to where he wants to go. But, like Jobs, and Stark for that matter, he might be an acquired taste on a personal level. There is no question that Musk is a special individual, someone with BIG dreams and the drive, talent, and money to make them happen. Elon Musk is not exactly a name that rolls easily off the tongue, like say Tony Stark, the fictional person to whom he is most often compared, or even Steve Jobs, a real-world visionary, whose mantle Musk now wears. Basically this entire book covers a 17 year old, Vane who discovers he’s a wind sylph from a guardian named Audra. Shannon made characters which were made from wind, I find this super cool. I loved learning more about the wind and how it would be if humans correlated with the wind. (Wind elements.) This was such a great series because the character development was a huge part of the books. She based an entire society off of SYLPHS. This series is so different from other YA series because of the ideas she comes up with. She captured the essence of this book perfectly and REALLY let her imagination run wild. Shannon Messenger is a fantastic author and I love her writing. I compared this to Under the Never Sky and I always say this series is the better version of that. Let the Skyfall by Shannon Messenger is a fantastic dystopian series. Theda Withel aka Ginger aka Delores de Syn. However, Dibbler acts more like Goldwyn than Silverfish does.
